One of the toughest men I've ever known recently passed away. He was something you can't find too much today...a real man. I came to Idaho in 1969 to be KLIX radios sports director and morning show person. The second night I was in Idaho, I was told I had to do the play by play for Buhl "Indian" Football. Mike Morrison was big then as a Senior High School linebacker, he was 6'2" and 230 lbs. with hands as big as catchers' mitts. It seemed like every play I mentioned his name as the tackler and some of his "putdowns" were trips to the hospital! His main love was rodeo, and he was a champion in Steer Wrestling, Bareback riding, and Bull riding. One time at Wells, Nevada he rode with a badly broken hand (he took the cast off!) and won the barebacks and bull riding. Mike and I became really good friends and he was one of the groomsmen at my wedding. Years later, my company built a rodeo arena in Jackpot, Nevada in conjunction with Cactus Pete's Casino. At that time Mike had married and owned a ranch just north of Wells, Nevada. When we had our "big Sunday Jackpot Team Ropings", Mike was always there, although some of his roping horses were... "questionable". Mike was on a big 1200 lb. gray that resembled a fire breathing dragon! Broke? Gentle? A rope horse?...not in the slightest. I'll never forget, and the Lord knows this is Gospel, when Mike nodded for his first steer, that big behemoth came out buckin' and snortin' and Ol' Mike just kickin' him the belly and twirlin' his rope. Mike caught the steer and his wide-eyed heeler caught the heels for the doggondest time I've ever seen! Mike was a Cowboy, he was a real man and above all...He was my friend!
