They didn't get the fame or the iconic label as did John Wayne, Clark Gable or some others. They didn't have "blockbuster" films that were up for the Academy Awards. But....they made good films and they were good people. Joel McCrea and Randolph Scott appeared in over 200 movies...most of them good, solid, "the bad guys lose" westerns. Since I was a little boy, I've been captivated by the "old west" and its movie and tv heroes, and McCrea and Scott are my favorites. They maybe weren't the best actors (debatable!) and didn't have that "name" starpower...But they could portray a "Cowboy" because they WERE cowboys. Randolph Scott was a very talented horseman off screen and on, he knew WHAT he was doing. A lot of people did not know Randolph Scott performed his own stunt work in the movies – he was a great athlete. Joel McCrea, without a doubt, is MY favorite for being a great horseman. There was never a stupid "Hollywood gee-haw" jerk the reins and kick em "in the belly" approach, McCrea KNEW how to handle a horse to get what was needed. McCrea proved his "Cowboy" talent in "Wichita, The Virginian and Ride the High Country" in which he starred with...Randolph Scott. These two cowboys influenced me not only because they could "ride" but because they were portraying what they were everyday – REAL! They didn't act...they just "did". Both Scott and McCrea were friends and business partners in real estate off screen and both had the scruples to do what was right! Today...we need many more real and reel Cowboys like Randolph Scott and Joel McCrea – the world would be a better place.
