I had to give my mind a rest...a break in the disgusting and disgraceful world and its destructive events. Yesterday, after Deanne and I returned home from doctor’s appointments and groceries, we thought that we needed some “quiet”, so, we drove over to Murtaugh Lake. It was a beautiful, absolutely perfect fall day and no one was there but us. The sun was glistening on the gold and rust colored leaves, the fish flopping in the water, the ducks paddling to nowhere in particular, and Deanne and I and “Festus” the dog, soaking in God’s best. I thought about “home” when I was 11 years old and the very chilly, clear Saturday afternoons in Wisconsin playing football at my neighbors. Our football games were a weekly “thing”, starting at 2PM and going until there were too many injuries or our parents came to get us for supper. We played tackle football, no “mamby pamby” 2-hand touch or whiney flag football...those denigrate the real meaning of the game. Every week provided bloody noses, ripped clothes, a fist fight or two and severe abrasions because the south end of our “field” was part of a gravel driveway! There were no refs...we called our own fair game (!!?) and if one team ran low with teammates, we shared to keep things even! We had “Big Richard” who at 12 years old, was over 6 feet tall and 210 pounds, not at all coordinated but he filled a space in the line, we had Gary who could block and tackle and run like a deer, but every single game he pee’d his pants! We had ME that was as slow as a “fast moving” turtle...BUT...I could throw a football to my favorite receiver Roger who went on to play college ball. Those were Golden Saturdays to cherish, and now at 76, I wished I could turn the calendar back and do it again. God bless a childhood of toughness and friendship that lasted forever.
