One of the great fictional movies came to life last Thursday night, Kevin Costner's "Field of Dreams". Naturally I'm prejudiced because I love baseball...since I was in grade school, all the way through high school and college...I loved to play, I loved to watch, I loved to listen to baseball. The movie was not about fist fights, car chases or any kind of violence...it was about a relationship between a father and son and a game of catch, yup, just playing catch. I remember how good it felt for my dad to take a few minutes and play a little catch. Very unfortunately, my father and I did not get along very well and some of these "catch" moments really meant something to me. I remember one particular "catch" time that I played a little painful trick on him. I was 14 and a freshman in high school, and I could throw a baseball. I'm not bragging, but if you wanted to play a lit' salt and pepper, I'd make your eyes water. Well, I hid the glove Dad normally used and told him I looked but doggone, can't find it. In its place, I gave him a ragged old paper-thin pocket, relic that offered NO protection whatever. We "warmed up" just lobbing about 20 throws and then I said "time to turn up the stove". I reared back and turned on the afterburners and let er' rip! Dad was tough and NEVER admitted pain but after about 6 of my "mosquito scorchers", he said "that's enough, I've got work to do!" Fifteen minutes later he was watering some of Mom's flowers, I saw him put the hose on his hand! I know that's cruel, but it felt good to me! I hope many of you had a "Field of Dreams" moment in your life...a treasured moment for all sons and fathers!
