There were no lights on the shabby dwellings, there were no wreaths on the doors. There weren't any parties with Bing Crosby singing "White Christmas", and there wasn't any gift giving of stale fruit cakes or "break your teeth" popcorn balls. There were no carolers roaming the streets or shouts of "Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year" echoing from the neighborhood bar...it was really, really quiet. Way out of town sitting in the dark telling sheepherder stories, some shepherds were suddenly blinded by a brilliant radiant light and an angel suddenly was sitting on a rock near them saying "Don't be afraid, I bring you good news that will bring great joy to all people!" The SAVIOR has been born in Bethlehem and you will recognize him by this sign – "you will find a baby wrapped snugly in strips of cloth, lying in a manger!" WHOOHEE!! Can you imagine how these ole' sheepherders felt? Holy Sheephooks! They were the first told of Jesus' birth and they almost jumped out of their sandals and scattered the herd!! Suddenly, a vast host of angels were praising God and saying "Glory to God in the highest heaven and may there be peace on earth and good will to men!" I can tell you, my dear reader, it was like the start of a high school track meet, those ole' shepherds fell all over themselves and they dropped things willy nilly in their race to get to Bethlehem! Out of breath and panting like a dyin' Volkswagen...they found Jesus with Joseph and Mary in a stable lying in a manger. It was eerily quiet as the shepherds paid their respects, and on bended knee with tears in their eyes, they said "Goodbye" and they left to tell everyone what they had seen...this great event didn't need the lights, the parties or the music...it had Jesus, and that's all we ever need!
Merry Christmas!
