I remember a great lady, my physical therapist after I had polio, Julane Wolfgram, she would NEVER let me quit. The polio epidemic of the early 1950's was devastating, many just gave up and accepted a life of being bed-ridden or living in a wheelchair...so sad. One day I was a bouncing, running, playing cowboys and Indians, five year old, the next...my parents didn't know if I would live. Dr. Louis Gueldner, our family doctor, was literally run ragged with all the cases of polio, trying to treat and help patients...even though information of that dreaded disease was limited. There weren't enough iron lungs to go around and hospitals were full and many victims were kept at home with daily visits from Dr. Gueldner. I lost the use of both legs and had to be fitted for braces and use crutches, and for a five year old...it was tough. The braces at that time were NOT anything like technology has produced today. They were very heavy, bulky and extremely tight and uncomfortable. Many times in the evenings, I remember my mom wiping off the blood from the sores they created. I started physical therapy about 8 months after my initial bout with polio and it was at Fort Atkinson Memorial Hospital I met an angel, Julane Wolfgram. This lady was a combination of Rambo, Mother Theresa, Vince Lombardi and the love of Jesus...all rolled into one great person. She would NOT let me weaken or "slack off" on my exercises and every day demanded more repetitions than the day before. She would chant "You can do this, push yourself...harder, try harder and my favorite, go, go just over the hill, over the next rise..." It was because of her grit and encouragement, a year later my right leg "came back" to about 85% healthy and strong! I believe with all my heart and soul that all of us "can do it", all of us can "push ourselves to try harder...success is over the next hill, just over the next rise!
