Not many friends or neighbors like him........We bought our " little slice of heaven", our property, in 1992, little did we know that the purchase came with a bona fide "caretaker". In all my years, whether it was my "growing" years in Wisconsin or my college time in Minnesota, or here in Southern Idaho, have I witnessed such a "good neighbor". I'm talking about our answer to a combination of Duck Dynasty, Jeremiah Johnson and Santa Claus...Rocky Matthews, to know him is to appreciate him. No matter what time of day or whatever the weather, he's always there to help. In the wintertime, if we get a pretty good cover of show, no worries, here comes Rocky with his huge loader – job done! If I break something or need something repaired, here comes Rocky – job done! If we're gone on a road trip, here comes Rocky to feed and watch the place – job done! However, when I say "Hey Rock, what do I owe ya?" he's gone in a flash, like Santa up a chimney! No Sir, there's not many friends and neighbors like Rocky! In Proverbs 27, verse 17, the Bible states, "As iron sharpens iron, so a friend sharpens a friend" - this is true of Ole Rock! He's very perceptive about what is going on in the community, state and the World and provides stimulating conversation with his insight. Proverbs 27, verse 10 says, "Never abandon a friend" and Rocky never has. Why am I writing this?...well, I'm feeling a little melancholy this morning. I think we take for granted those around us that would do anything for us, and we say a flimsy "thank you" and move on...I'm guilty of that. So from now on, I am going to try to really show an appreciation for what's been done for me! Whether its my neighbor, my wife, my kids, whomever...I'm really going to try to let them know they are a blessing in my life. This Christmas season, maybe the best Christmas present you can give is a strong handshake or a hug and say "God Bless You and thank you for being my friend!"
Goober has our home looking just like a Santa Claus home! The den and living room are sooo beautiful with all the lights and figurines and Nativity scenes and plump lil' snowmen and dancing Santas! I love it!! I honestly feel that at any moment, I'll hear a pounding of hooves on the roof and a hearty "Ho Ho Ho, Merry Christmas" from a chubby man in a red suit!...But most of all, I love to sit and wonder at the Nativity scenes...wonder what it was like over 2000 years ago, the night that Jesus was born! What a glorious time!!
