I'm writing this on the first day of autumn...has a nice "charm" to it right?...NOPE!!! Fall or autumn, whatever...has a very delightful beginning and then...a very ominous sinister end...WINTER!! Everyone says, "Look at the beautiful colors, oh my! what a gorgeous sunset, or, my, my, the pumpkins and the corn stalks are scenic"! No they are not...they are the "advance team" to thrust us into the ice and agony of...WINTER! Some people enjoy getting "all bundled up" to go out the back door, not me, I see it as a plot to injure me. Now at almost 70 years of age its tougher and tougher to prepare for the elements. Oh goody!, its only going to be 21 degrees outside today, lets get dressed! First we tug and we pull to get on a pair of longhandles that really shrunk from last year...okay lil' tight. Now we find a pair of socks that are so heavy and thick that if your feet sweat you'll die from athletes foot! Okay...got em' on. Now the long sleeve t-shirt that you bought at a Boise State game 10 years ago...tug, tug some more...aaagh – finally you get it over your "didn't have 10 years ago" tummy! Okay...we're ready for the Carhartt jeans with the flannel lining..tug and pull, tug and pull – whew! - stand up and button them...are you kidding?!...with the longhandles and the heavy t-shirt, you lay flat on the bed and suck in the ole' bread basket and force the copper button into the slot... "Hot dog, you did it"!! However trying to stand up creates a feeling of being a folded jack knife and the pain really does cause a sweat! You are now ready for your $200 "can't get cold in this dude" thermal shirt...yeah man, your rollin' now...ooh fits good too! However at this point, the sweat is rollin' off your forehead and forming puddles at your feet...oh yeah...now we've got to put our brand new boots!...you can't bend over far enough to tie them...you call for your spouse so she can assist you like when you were in kindergarten!! Okay...next the coat and hat and oh, yes...the gloves! Man!! We are ready for all that nature has in store for us...let's go!! Now...dear reader...you probably started getting all this paraphernalia on at least 2 hours ago...you open the door and something is really, really wrong...it's...it's beautiful, at least...in the 50's!! No...No! All this preparation for temps in the 50's! After all the pain and swearing and getting a "wedgy" from the longhandles....it's in the 50's!! There is NO charm to winter, there is no "delight" in this physical exercise!...Goober and I are joining a nudist colony in Rio de Janeiro..."See" you there??
On the bright side of fall.......football! Watching my three grandsons play for Kimberly is really neat! They are good and they play on good teams. "Granny" and I really enjoy those boys...take time to smell the hot chocolate folks...before its too late!
