Taps will be played one last time for Russell Smith...he died last Wednesday. Sadly, part of America will be laid in the grave with him...integrity, pride and honor. Russell joined the Army as a teenager and proudly accepted the danger of fighting for the United States of America and its allies. He was wounded three times and thus was honored with three Purple Hearts for heroic service.

A few years ago, I had Russell in my studio to discuss the war and his involvement...both of us and my audience were moved to tears. His voice became faint and muffled when he spoke of helping shut down the unbelievably pathetic and horrible Buchenwald Death Camp and rescue the remaining ghost-like starving survivors...he cried...I did too.

He talked in his soft reflective voice about wading ashore on D-Day at Utah Beach where the frothy ocean had turned red with the blood of his fellow soldiers, many screaming for help...begging for help...but soon the cries stopped...he cried...I did too. He talked of his wounds and his thoughts of dying...but then...he talked of healing and demanding that he go back and fight again for our Country that he loved so much. And, finally, after three Purple Hearts...he came home.

Russell was a very quiet man, but, after some conversation you could see the twinkle in his eyes and he'd start injecting some humor into the conversation. Some of his stories he shared with me regarding wine, women and song might have made a few people blush...he laughed...I did too. Russell was a big fan of my radio program and listened every day...after he had raised his American flag up the pole and saluted his beloved red, white and blue.

Time catches up with us all, and Russell moved from his home in Burley to the Veterans Home in Pocatello, with of course, his U.S. flag to be saluted every morning and night. For his 92nd birthday we hoped to bring him to our monthly "Lunch Bunch" for a party in his honor, but his failing health would not allow this to be. So, we took the party to him via a complete video of all the festivities, the well wishes, and of course, a huge birthday cake...I was told he loved it and he cried. I did too.

When Russell died, the staff at the Veterans Home covered him in his beloved flag. As they went down the hall, Veterans and staff members stopped, stood at attention and saluted Russell one last time. Readers, you have NO idea how blessed I feel to have given Russell that one last final salute for him to savor...he was truly in every sense of the words, AN AMERICAN HERO! Taps will be played one more time for Russell Smith...may God bless him and cradle him in His arms for Eternity - - -

Day is done
Gone the sun
From the lakes
From the hills
From the sky
All is well
Safely rest
God is nigh
Eternal peace...my friend!

GOD BLESS AMERICA!

Our Pledge of Allegiance:
I pledge Allegiance to the flag
of the United States of America
and to the Republic for which it stands,
one nation under God, indivisible,
with Liberty and Justice for all.

Dear Lord: Please Bless and heal this land with your grace and power.
Help us to realize YOU are in charge as you were, as you are now and like
you'll be in the future. Forgive us for "straying off the trail" of what's right
and what's wrong and help us to appreciate what you've blessed us with,
the greatest Country in the world...America!
In Jesus Name.....Amen
