Take 10 minutes, sit down and....remember. One of the things I do at Christmastime is to find the time to sit in my living room with only the tree lights and ornament lights on, no TV..radio...nothing else. Then, I let my mind wander back to my younger days in Wisconsin, the deep snow, the extreme cold, the Advent Service at our little church, and the warmth and comfort of coming in the house after a freezing trip to town.
I remember Mom making hot chocolate served with one of her "500" varieties of Christmas Cookies, and Dad always yelling "Don't spill on the carpet!" I remember trimming the tree and my job of stringing popcorn and cranberries on LONG threads - - - and - - - I always wounded myself with the needle! I vividly remember putting together the Nativity, and then, lying on the floor marveling at the manger scene, so serene and peaceful.
I remember the excitement of Christmas morning...usually awake by 4 AM...and sitting on the top step waiting to hear some form of movement downstairs!! I remember after the presents were opened, Mom had delicious strudel and eggs for breakfast...oh, how I miss that! Then at mid-morning, I remember the neighborhood men coming to our house for a glass of wine and a "Christmas Toast"...it was fun to listen to them and their stories.
Then, at about 1 PM, here come the relatives! All the Grandpa's and Grandma's, aunts and uncles and their kids, what a houseful for Christmas Dinner...and yes...my Dad continually worrying someone would spill cranberries on the carpet. They stayed...all day...and finally out the door they went, back into the COLD CHRISTMAS NIGHT.
Suddenly, the house was quiet...really quiet. THIS was my favorite time to just sit still and...be thankful for what the day had provided...peace, love, giving and sharing. What a great day Christmas was in the past and still is with my family...and I promise you this...it will remain a treasure to me in the future...Merry Christmas to YOU and...take 10 minutes, sit down and...
